About the Holistic Student Supports Institute

Our annual Holistic Student Supports Institute (HSSI) is not just an event; it's a comprehensive and ongoing initiative dedicated to the holistic development and well-being of our students. Join us at Columbus State Community College on November 8 for a full day of interactive sessions designed to help practitioners connect, network, and learn together.

PLUS, we are offering a post-institute certification course on November 9: Trauma-Informed Campus and Classroom. The course is designed to learn how to deal with the impact of trauma and implement strategies that foster resilience. More information below.

In this interactive session, Drs. Derrick Tillman-Kelly and Christopher Travers partner to deliver an insightful and engaging experience that invites participants to step away from the day-to-day work of leading at their community college. Instead, they will discuss the meaning of partnership for student supports, introduce a love praxis, and strategize about the use of this praxis to ensure its impact is available to all – students and college employees.

Results from the third iteration of the Ohio Community College Advisors survey are in - hear from Anne Foster (OACC’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness) and Diana Wisse (Columbus State’s Senior Director of Student Affairs) as they review the recent survey findings and delve into the specific mindset changes observed among advisors who have embraced the holistic student supports model.

Keynote Speakers

Derrick Tillman-Kelly Chief of Staff, College of Engineering, Ohio State University

Derrick L. Tillman-Kelly, PhD, is chief of staff, serving as principal advisor to Dean Ayanna Howard. An experienced higher education researcher, administrator, and project manager, he most recently served as director of the Fellows Program and Network Engagement for the University Innovation Alliance (UIA). In this role, he worked with member universities to support institutional transformation with the goal of eliminating race/ethnicity, first-generation status, and socioeconomic status as predictors of student success and completion. Ohio State is one of 11 UIA member institutions, and President Kristina M. Johnson serves on its board.

Prior to being named director of the UIA Fellows Program, Tillman-Kelly served in multiple roles at Ohio State, including as the inaugural UIA Fellow and special assistant to the director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise. He also is co-principal investigator and research lead of the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence for Broadening Participation in STEM, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Tillman-Kelly earned his PhD in educational policy and leadership with a specialization in higher education and student affairs from Ohio State. He also earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan University.

Christopher Travers Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Maryland; Founder and CEO, The Communion Collective

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Christopher S. Travers (he/him) is an educator, speaker, writer and artist whose scholarship explores life-making among Black folx in higher education through liberatory masculinities, faith and spiritual connection, and love-based pedagogy and practice. Travers holds over 15 years of experience in education, teaching, speaking and diversity + equity programming, and his work has been published in several scholarly journals, including Spectrum: A Journal on Black Men, The Journal of Negro Education, Urban Education and the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, among others. He currently serves as the Founder + CEO of The Communion Collective.

Travers earned a Ph.D. in higher education and student affairs from The Ohio State University, a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Towson University and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Frostburg State University.

Trauma-Informed Certification Course

This trauma-informed certification course helps us learn how to deal with the impact of trauma and build resilience and open another vital path to creating equity for our students. The key objective of this Community Resilience Initiative (CRI) six-hour course is to provide information about identifying and responding to difficult situations with evidence-based resilience strategies when working with an audience whose history with traumatic experiences may not be known.
